Borussia Dortmund vs. Bayern Munich To Match Up in 2019 DFL Super Cup

DFL Super Cup Overview

The upcoming 2019 DFL Super Cup Match between Bayern and Dortmund is one of the big heavyweight matches that you do not want to miss. This was evidently shown as both of them competed bitterly for the German Bundesliga title.

Let's step back for a moment and talk a bit about the DFL Super Cup.

Where The DFL Super Cup Started From

The DFL Super Cup is a match organized by the German Football League between the winners of the Bundesliga (German League) and the winners of the DFB-Poka (League Cup). In the case where a single team wins both trophies, the winner plays the runner up of the Bundesliga. The Match lasts for 90 minutes and goes straight to penalties after the end of normal time. No extra time is played.

There have been nine previous editions of the DFL Super Cup. This year’s edition scheduled to be played in August will be the tenth edition of the event. The DFL super cup was superseded by a tournament known as the DFB Supercup.

The DFB-Supercup was run by the German Football Association and started in 1987 and was inactive between 1996 and 2009. The DFL Supercup started in 2010 and was renamed to DFL because it is now being organized by the German Football League and not the German FA.

Bayern Munich is the team with the most Supercup titles having 7 to their name, followed closely by Borussia Dortmund who has won it five times. Robert Lewandowski of Bayern Munich is the player with the most goals ever in the DFL Supercup with five goals, followed by Wynton Rufer of Werder Bremen with four goals.

Fun Facts About Both Teams That Will Blow Your Mind

This year’s edition is to take place on August 3rd between Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund at the Signal Iduna Park in Dortmund.

Bayern Munich is the winner of the Bundesliga and the three-time defending champions of the DFL. They are the most successful team in Germany and have won the Bundesliga 29 times, the Champions League/European Cup 5 times, and the DFB-Pokal19 times.

Also, they are based in Munich and play their home games at the Allianz Arena - a 75000 capacity stadium; one of the biggest in Europe. They are also the richest team in Germany and one of the top 5 richest teams in the World.

On the other hand, Borussia Dortmund is the second largest club by membership in Germany and will be hosting this year's tournament. They have on the Bundesliga 9 times, the DFB-Pokal4 times, and the Champions League once.

Their stadium, the Signal Iduna Park, is the biggest stadium in Germany. Also, it is one of the biggest in Europe and is renowned for its atmosphere. It has a capacity of 81,365 for both standing and seating combined. In the 2011-2012 season, it set the record for the highest average attendance in Europe.

The 24,454 capacity of Südtribüne (South Bank) is 24,454 and is the largest terrace for standing football spectators in Europe. It is also famous for the intense atmosphere it generates and has been nicknamed the Die Gelbe Wand, meaning "The Yellow Wall" in English. Additionally, they are the 11th Richest team in Europe and the second richest team in Germany.

Who Will Be Victorious?

Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund have a fierce rivalry and matches between them are known as the Der Klassiker which means German Classico. They have played each other 123 times with Bayern having 58 wins, Dortmund 32 wins, and the resting ending in a draw. They are two of the most successful teams in German football; having won 21 of the past 24 Bundesliga titles as of 2018.

The two teams fought closely for the Bundesliga title in the early 2010s and met in the 2013 UEFA Champions League Final. However, the fierceness of the rivalry has been called into doubt; with many arguing that the fixture cannot be regarded as being a "classic." This was because there was a little historic rivalry between the teams.

The two met in a historic champions league final during the 2012-2013 edition at the iconic Wembley stadium. There, Bayern emerged winners, securing a 2 -1 victory over their rivals. Bayern goals came from Arjen Robben and Mario Mandzukic while Illkay Gundogan scored Dortmund’s lone goal. The win in the final secured Bayern’s first treble in their history.

Before the game, Dortmund's Mario Götze had already agreed to join Bayern in the coming weeks. This was done in a controversial move which took the whole footballing world by surprise. Mario Götze missed the final though through injury.

Even more, there has also been movement of players across both sides; Mario Götze famously agreed to join Bayern before the 2013 final at Wembley. Dortmund’s Striker Robert Lewandowski and Dortmund’s defender Mats Hummels are a couple of the big names who have moved from Dortmund to Bayern.

Fun Things To Do While In Dortmund For The Game

Dortmund is a beautiful place and would be fun for any tourist wanting to watch the DFL Super Cup. There are some fun places you could visit before the game or after the game. One highly noteworthy place is the German Football Museum.

Football enthusiasts can get enough information and history of the game at this new museum. However, it was also built for a wide range of audience as well. It contains museum artifacts that look at the sport's historical, economic, cultural, and social significance to the society in addition to its entertainment value. You'll be taken through artifacts that let you learn about fan culture, football as a role model, and nutrition’s relationship with football.

How the sport has been affected by historical events is seen through exhibits on football in the 1930s and 40s, under National Socialism as well as under the Communist regime in the GDR. The centerpiece of a display in the museum is the football used in 1954 final; this brought about Germany's first World Cup victory.

You'll learn how the game evolved and was developed in Germany and England. Plus, you also get to know about other great moments in German Football.

If you want to see something non-football related and you like vintage vehicles, don't miss the beautiful collection of old trams. This is located at Dortmund's Local Transport Museum, housed in Mooskamp Station.

The oldest of the trams can be dated back to the 1900s. These fascinating displays of the city's century-old transit system are one of the centers of tourist attractions in Dortmund. From Dortmund, these old trams carried workers into the region’s mines, steelworks and coke plants located deep into the Rhur Valley.

Also present in the museum is a collection of fine vintage vehicles, including Jaguars and Ferraris, plus displays relating to the evolution, development, and improvement of Germany's automobile industry.

Final Score

The game is sure to be a cracker. There will surely be lots of excellent, beautiful football on display. Plus, you also get to visit lots of events and places that you might not otherwise get a chance to see in your daily life.
